Courtesies of the Heart
by Kenneth Breaux
A chance discussion in a Texas home on New Year's Eve 2001 regarding the movie "Saving Private Ryan," a renovated Czech schoolhouse in the village of Kovarska, experts from the U.S, Army in Hawaii, and Czech volunteers extended and fulfilled the courtesy of the heart begun by a gracious German citizen in Seoptember 1944 in the Thuringer Wald of Germany. This is the fascinating story of how a Tulsa World War II pilot came home on Memorial Day 2004, only a few months short of sixty years from the time he flew his last mission. Czech family cookbook – cooking with the Klimas!
by Dr. Marcella Klima
Dr. Marcella Klima has developed a definitive cookbook filled to the brim with recipes with the flavor of the Czech lands. An encyclopedic volume of 536 pages, the front cover in English with half of the recipes corresponding in that language, and for the Czech reader a reversal of the volume reveals identical recipes in the Czech language! This unique cookbook has been developed over a twenty-year period to chronicle family recipes in order to pass them on to her daughter, Eva, as Marcella says, “for her to use after I am gone.”
Each recipe is delightfully annotated by an anecdotal remembrance of how the recipe entered into the family and became a favorite with each recipe relating to a particular event or happening. As someone said, “Even if you cook none of the recipes, it is absorbing reading in itself.” Native of Czechoslovakia, many of the recipes were remembered as used during times when the communists were in power affecting the availability of certain food items. A Heritage Treasure and a Library necessity.
