On January 25, 2024, the first meeting of the Milan Kundera Book Club was held at the Czech Center Museum Houston. At this opening event, Robert Cremins and Dan Price from the Honors College at the University of Houston spoke about Kundera’s art and philosophy.
Milan Kundera Book Club: The Joke
On February 29, 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting Robert Cremins and Dan Price once again in our second event exploring the work of Milan Kundera. Cremins and Price, from the Honors College at the University of Houston, led us in a discussion of Kundera's The Joke, one of the seeds of the Prague Spring. They were joined by Karel Lill from the University of St. Thomas-Houston, who presented on Moravian musicology.
CZECHS, COLLECTED: Artists Reception
On March 20, 2024, the CCMH welcomed back FotoFest co-founder Wendy Watriss and FotoFest executive director Steven Evans to Prague Hall to discuss the history of Czech photography. They were joined by photographers Roman Franc, Štěpán Grygar, Gabriela Sauer Kolčavová, and Vojtěch V. Sláma.
Milan Kundera Book Club: The Unbearable Lightness of Being
On April 16, 2024, Robert Cremins and Dan Price from the Honors College at the University of Houston led us in a discussion of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, a best-seller that became a popular film. They were in conversation with Houston author and physician Ricardo Nuila from the Humanities Expression and Arts Lab (HEAL) at Baylor College of Medicine. DACAMERA young artists performed music from Beethoven’s late String Quartet in F Major, Op. 135, prominently referenced in the novel.
The Restoration Talk
On September 6, 2024, Rachel Townsend and Lauren Enyart from Bradley’s Art & Frame shared with our audience the complex and delicate process of frame and art conservation and restoration, focusing on original pieces from the CCMH collection.
Milan Kundera Book Club: The Book of Laughter and Forgetting
On September 19, 2024, fan favorites Robert Cremins and Dan Price from the Honors College at the University of Houston returned once more to lead us in a discussion of The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, which back in late 1980 The New York Times called “the most original book of the season.”
