Učitelka (The Teacher) — A teacher misuses her students in order to obtain favors from their parents in Soviet-era Czechoslovakia in Jan Hřebejk’s The Teacher. The Teacher is set in 1980s Bratislava and the dialogue is in Slovak with English subtitles. Zuzana Mauréry plays The Teacher; she won the Best Actress award at the 2016 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for this role. The Teacher was also nominated at the 2017 Czech Lion Awards for best film, best actress, and best music.
While The Teacher‘s setting and story are specific – it is reportedly based on a true incident – the theme of the empowering effect of a pernicious ideology is universal and relevant today. It’s a riveting watch and timely viewing.
