Jan Reich 1990-2009
In 1990 FotoFest presented PERSPECTIVES, REAL AND IMAGINARY, Nineteen Contemporary Czechoslovak Photographers to celebrate the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Number of the featured artists traveled to Houston, among them Jan Reich. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the FotoFest Biennial the Czech Center Museum is please to present a large cross section of his work.

Jan Reich, one of the last classic proponents of Czech photography relentlessly photographed his native Prague, Bohemian landscape, historical landmarks, and the Czech countryside. Many of his images were created with a large format wooden camera given to him by the estate of Josef Sudek.

Songs of Love and Longing

The Nazi destruction of Lidice in 1942 —announced in grim headlines around the world—sparked a powerful global response from artists, writers, filmmakers, and workers. Though Lidice could have been lost amid the many atrocities of World War II, it instead became a lasting symbol of resistance.
