Brodsky, a Czech Jew, came to the US around 1920. Upon arrival, he searched for a job for a very long time. Brodsky had insufficient funds that he couldn't even buy a pair of second-hand shoes. Ashamed that he had to walk barefoot, Brodsky decided to blackened his feet every morning to give the illusion that he was wearing shoes and could find a job. Eventually, he found a job on a whaleboat and made a new start with the little money he would save. Brodsky then returned to New York, where he eventually became a wealthy person.
