Three Wishes for Cinderella is an Eastern European adaptation of the popular story Cinderella, directed by Vaclav Vorlicek in 1973 based on a story written by Bozena Nemcova. The story’s key differences are that the prince must actively pursue Cinderella, who has three magic nuts that grant her wishes and is an excellent huntsman. Three Wishes for Cinderella portrays a much stronger, independent female character than the more traditional version, where Cinderella waits passively for her prince to come find her. Instead, in Three Wishes, Cinderella projects the spirit of a warrior at ease with her environment and that of a free spirit.

The movie is quite popular across European countries and is screened around Christmas time on TV in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Norway and sometimes Sweden, Ukraine, and Russia.
